Core Buildups

Where the crown of the tooth is so worn out that it is impossible to carry out its reconstruction with either a filling or a crown, a core buildup can be placed into the root canal (from which a nerve had previously been removed) and is then cemented and acts as an armature on which the filling or prosthetic (crown) can then be constructed. These buildups can be made of metal, non-metal, or of composite materials.

The advantages of this method are primarily preservation of tooth root and the jawbone (when a tooth is removed there is bone resorption where the tooth was), maintenance of the interdental relationships because neighboring teeth move towards the open space when tooth is missing, and increased possibility to use treated tooth as a bearer for a greater prosthetic construction.
